Creating a culture that truly looks after employees and leaders requires intentionality and conscious effort. This doesn't happen by accident. Ultimately, a culture of care requires sustained commitment from everyone. The results: higher engagement, retention, and performance. My approach is to listen first, and then work with senior leadership to implement a bespoke strategy that has wellbeing, coaching and learning at its heart.

Creating effective leaders
In today's fast-paced world, exceptional leadership is not just about driving results, it's about inspiring and connecting with people on a deeper level. Knowing your people and knowing how to connect with them is invaluable. Step one is to know yourself.

 

‘How to be more inspired’ embeds human skills through a values-based approach. We kick things off with a strengths tool that highlights how your values and beliefs shape daily behaviours and actions. From this foundation, leaders unlock inspiration by aligning their authentic selves with their leadership. I use a coaching approach in all my training.

Creating high performing teams
The theory states that there are 5 dysfuctions of teams: absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability and inattention to results.

My starting point is always to build or restore trust, and this can often be intensely challenging.

Once trust is in place and voices heard, I use a combination of coaching and workshops to create a functional team that performs. Culture is directly related to performance, get the first part right and results will follow. Ask me about the team shield!

NLP taught me that there is nearly always something behind human behaviour, and my starting point will be evidence from staff surveys. I use accredited surveys like the Warwick-Edinburgh mental wellbeing scale (WEMWBS) to get a quick sense of what is going on. I will repeat this after 12-15 months.

​

When staff feel valued, have purpose and are clear on expectations it is possible to see change. In one organisation this change came about within 9 months, when we earned the prestigious Workplace Wellbeing Charter accreditation. Morale soared and collaboration flourished as teams recognised the investment in them. Once-struggling teams became engaged and performance increased.

 

The business turned profitable after 12 months.

Overwhelm and burnout

Recognising and responding to stress

Teams and individuals often show warning signs when things aren't going well. There may be a lot of sick days, people quitting and toxic behaviours in teams. For individuals the signs of burnout include lack of energy, cynicism and less efficient at work. 

​

For overwhelmed teams and individuals, there is no quick fix. A combination of factors likely contributed to reaching that point.

​

Away days or time away from 'the office' is essential to start creating calmer minds that will make better decisions. Often I will combine a bit of theory with something practical to get people moving! Time outdoors in nature is helpful. I have had teams planting bulbs and clearing weeds and watched as they notice their own stress levels falling. I will also coach individuals outdoors and go for a 'walk and talk', which has been transformational. Nature is known to reduce stress and calmer minds create clearer thinking.
